I understand the fun and idea of kids getting gifts at their school parties, but I honestly hate the process of buying a $5 gift for a kid that I don't know. Not only does $5 not buy much these days in the way of a toy, there are also restrictions about what you can give (no makeup, candy, jewelry, etc).
This year, Isaac's teacher has a GREAT system for their gift giving. Instead of the kids buying a toy for someone else, she has the parents buy THEIR child a book. I am supposed to not let him see it and send it wrapped. Doing it this way, each child still has a gift to open, but the parent knows the child and what they like. AND, we don't end up with MORE Hot Wheels (about the only boy thing I could find at Walmart for $5).
